Edison Innovation Awards
Edison's legacy of entrepreneurship and innovation are alive today. That's why the Edison Innovation Awards were created to recognize the achievements of the people and companies who continue to improve our world.
The Edison Innovation Awards will be presented as part of a gala ceremony that celebrates the best of innovation, and will undoubtedly generate tremendous media and PR in the business and general news press.
Awards will be presented in a select group of categories that are directly linked to Thomas Edison.
Edison understood the importance of the commercial value of his inventions. Many of his patents were for products that were not only novel, but were useful things people wanted to buy.
SOUND RECORDING TECHNOLOGY
The phonograph was Edison's favorite invention, and one of his greatest. This category is designed to honor work that builds upon Edison's pioneering discoveries in audio technology.
MOTION PICTURE AND TV TECHNOLOGY
The Hollywood magic we enjoy today owes a debt to the earliest form of moving pictures, the kinetograph. Edison also introduced the first commercially successful motion picture projector, and the first motion picture studio, named the "Black Maria."
COMMUNICATIONS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Today's high-tech world of fiber optics and high-speed data are built upon much of Edison's original research in this field. This category will recognize innovation in all areas of digital information.
Though he manufactured and sold improved x-ray equipment, Edison refused to patent his discoveries and instead publicized his research for the benefit of the medical community.
An improved storage battery, dynamo, and the electric car are just some of the many energy-related inventions Edison created. Today, innovations in energy include research and development of more efficient and alternative sources.
RESEARCH & EDUCATION
Edison's "invention factory" itself was a new idea, and was the forerunner of today's corporate R&D and university research departments. This category will honor that tradition of learning.
A special category to recognize the work of young inventors. As a young boy, Edison was already honing his creative and entrepreneurial skills in a basement laboratory. He started his first company at age 15 and earned his first patent at age 21.
INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR
The Edison Innovation Awards will annually recognize a singular example of genius selected from across all categories. This award will truly honor the "best of the best."
TRIUMPH IN INNOVATION
Few people know that the inventor of recorded sound was himself nearly deaf. Today, examples of people who achieve greatness despite adversities of all kinds will be honored by this award.
A special award category designed to recognize an extraordinary body of work in any field. The Edison Innovation Awards Lifetime Achievement is the world's premier recognition of achievement in innovation.
SUPPORT OF INNOVATION
Designed to recognize corporate institutions, individuals, philanthropic organizations and others who have made an outstanding contribution to the innovative spirit through business or academia.
